Abusing authority : forcing suicide
December 27,2006 is a black day in KU's history. This day, a staff, who gave his all to KU ended his life. And he had to end his life because the powerful officials of KU administration rebuked him, scolded him, threatened him and chastised him for being a member of an oppressed community. What registrar of KU and the dean Bhola Thapa had said to Late Buddhi Bahadur has also vanished with him. Because KU registrar and the dean will never accept their crime and repent. So, only credible source of information regarding his untimely death is the statement of his widowed wife. And this credibility is also being tarnished and being destroyed by a smear campaign against the deceased and his spouse.
Recently, while watching "300," I was awestruck by the similarity the plot has with the developments in KU. Spartan King Leonidas give all to his kingdom and his people while seeking martyrdom against the expansionist Persian King Xerxes. But, back home his wife queen Gorgo had to rally support by sleeping with a cunning politician who not only betrays her but also the nation. In "300," we saw that the abusive politician is finally exposed and put to death. And we also saw that the nation rallies behind the martyrdom against Xereses. In KU, we are yet to see abusive gang of Bhola Thapa, Registrar Bhadraman, VC Suresh Raj and Advisor Sitaram going to jail. Now, as regards rallying and unity amongst the faculties, I am proud of the members who have joined KUPA, KUSA and SWC, but I simply detest those who are licking the boots of Suresh Raj and Sitaram.
Why KU fraternity and the faculties have not been able to concretize immediate arrest of Bhola Thapa and registrar Bhadraman or Sitaram (Whoever might have issued threats of defamation and humiliating remarks to Late Buddhi) has something to do partly with machinations of KU administrators and partly with our own shortcomings. Before the untimely death of Buddhi Bahadur from KU, there was another suicide of same nature in Kavre district itself. One student, Late Sagar Basnet, from Kavre Secondary High School, Panauti committed suicide by consuming poison. Like Buddhi Bahadur he was also humiliated by the powerful personality of the school and he could not take it any longer and ended his life. Subsequently, entire Panauti got enraged and forced the school management to accept their mistakes. The school management not only promised of erecting the bust of the deceased student, but also agreed to provide scholarships in his name. Khuman Singh Tamang reported this in the Kantipur(Please find it here) . But, the same Khuman Singh could not find his words in both the vernacular Kantipur Daily and the English The Kathmandu Post. Budhhi Bahadur was a staff and was humiliated in far uglier terms, yet Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman managed to prevent the news from reaching the newstand. They exercised all their powers so that they can save Bhola Thapa to save themselves.
How cunning KU administration was, during those days, can be gauged by the fact that, in the wake of Buddhijee's death, they disappeared Bhola Thapa for a couple of days from KU. Once the news of Buddhi's death spread, crest fallen Bhola Thapa could not gather his wits to go to Dhulikhel campus. However, Suresh Raj advised him to take his time and advised him to avoid coming to Dhulikhel. At the same time, Suresh Raj constantly kept on requesting his contacts in Nepalis media and publications not to publish that news report. By successfully preventing the appearance of the news report in media, Suresh Raj somehow managed to taper off enragement of the faculties and the staffs. Consequently, when Bhola Thapa reappeared in KU, he did not have to face wrath of the KU fraternity like the principal of Kavre Secondary School, Panuati because by then emotions have subsided.
Arson and vandalism never constitute justice. Whatever may be their crimes, Bhola, Bhadraman, and Suresh Raj should never be meted out inhuman treatments. At the same time, they should not be let free without facing trial to restore justice. So far the affairs have been real sad. No body so far ventured to ask Bhola Thapa about his crimes. Life is already lost but the perpetrator has remained unquestioned. No body asked him why he is doing all these things? And no body has ever asked him at whose instruction, faculties and staffs are being humiliated? Despite his brazen crime, likes of Bhola Thapa are now going in overdrive to bulldoze the KUPA movement. This simply shows that Suresh Raj is as ruthless as king Xerexes of "300." And this ruthlessness need to be matched by stoickness by KUPA and every free thinking faculty member of KU. Howevermuch Suresh Raj carries out his machinations, and however many deaths he presides over, we should never compromise on our principles.
On the other hand, with entry of CIAA in KU, we need to realize that there is a new ray of hope. And there is a possibility that crime against Buddhijee will also be brought to justice. Therefore, without resorting to any vandalism, which mandale Suresh Raj and his clan generally resorts to, and without being intimidated, we need to petition CIAA that they should look into suicide case also. KUPA and friends must ensure that CIAA would summon Bhola Thapa and hold him accountable for abusing his position and harassing a staff to commit suicide.

KAVRE, Dec 15 - A ninth grader at Kavre Secondary School in Panauti committed suicide Tuesday following extreme torture at the hands of the principal and a teacher. Sagar Basnet consumed poison after the teacher and the principal forced him to stand up in the exam hall for
10 minutes and beat him with a bamboo.
The school management has suspended principal Sitaram Tiwari and teacher Dambar Dahal and started an investigation.
Basnet died at Scheer Memorial Hospital while undergoing treatment after consuming the poison. The boy's family and eyewitnesses say he was subjected to mental torture for arriving at the examination hall without an admission card. He did not posses the card as his fees had not been paid for the last two months.
"He felt quite humiliated after he was made to stand for 10 minutes at the examination hall and beaten and scolded by the teachers," said his close friend Sunil Sapkota, adding, "Later he refused to have tea upon our request." The principal beat him on the legs with bamboo sticks, according to eyewitnesses. His legs were covered with bruises, said his father Kumar. The school management suspended the teacher and the principal after the parents, students and locals resorted to vandalizing the school in protest against the torture.
Later, the school management and the victim's party reached an agreement to set up a revolving fund and provide yearly scholarships to three students in Basnet's memory. The management also promised to raise his statue in the school premises. Surrounding the school, the irate parents, students and locals vandalized the school and beat up Tiwari and Dahal. The principal sustained knee-injury and the teacher, head injury.
