KU's Sitaram syndrome
Enough has already been spoken about how Sitaram of KU became rich. A mere government official went onto become a nuveau rich who could go to Singapore to buy goodies for sweety darling on her marriage. Gauri Shankar Adhikary's useless house sans water and sans cleanliness despite having Navaraj there could not be the milkiing cow for Sitaram. Rs. 50,000 per month by Nepalis standard is nothing in US. So, Sitaram funded sonny Sharad's US education solely on the strength of ill-gotten wealth, accrued from construction boom in KU. Sitaram's story is not puzzling because,in Nepal, many have followed the same trajectory to become wealthy in short span of their lives. If the chum from I.Sc. days, Ramesh Dhungel swears in Baneswore that Sitaram urinated on his bed when he came to Kathmandu with an empty pocket, how can we doubt about his initial poverty?
Presently, I am not sure Ramesh Dhungel will repeat the same statement. At that time Ramesh Dhungel was given cold shoulder by both Sitaram and Suresh Raj. But now, Ramesh Dhungel is already nominated as one of the trustees along with Daman Nath Dhungana. So, it is natural that Ramesh Dhungel would outrightly deny that he ever spoke such a thing against Sitaram. It is quite possible that he may consider such thoughts and ideas profane and blasphemous against a good name of portly Sitaram.
People complain only when they are sidelined and on the verge of being relegated to the dustbin of the history. Pushparaj used to get angry every day and every night till he was made the dean. Put a drink, be it beer or whishky or wine, before Pushpa Raj, and he would invigorate him with the drink to claim that "Sitaram is a chor(thief)." Many KU gatherings reverberated with this punchline from Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj. But, these are stories of past without any evidence and any witness. It is another thing that certain track records may be found in certain mail boxes. However, even if CIAA questions Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj about veracity of his punchline, we are not going to get it. Pushpa Raj has his mouth sealed with plum positions in KU.
In a nutshell, transformation of Ramesh Dhungel and Pushpa Raj has something to do with with a syndrome KU is plagued with. It would be apt to call it KU's Sitaram syndrome because he is the one who runs the dirty tricks of Suresh Raj and provides necessary intelligence to perpetuate nepotism in KU. Cunning Sitaram is a past master of manipulation. He knows very well as the registrar of KU, he has to manage people and keep them in size. And he has unique way of managing contradictions. If one staff or faculty is making vociferous demand for promotion, he will immdiately sound out likely competitor of the staff to make the same demand. Once all make the same demand, he talks about regulations, rules and constraints of self-sustaining University like KU. But, if faculties demand in unison why KU is not giving adequate salary, then he will meekly claim that they are developing KU infrastructure. Faculties and staffs have undergone salary cut. They have foregone promotions and other incentives because Sitaram says that KU infrastructure should be developed.
Eversince Sitaram built a bangalow in Thapagaun, he has been claiming development of one or antoher thing. Not only in KU and erstwhile Royal Drug Limited, even in Chemical Soceity of Nepal, he has sounded out people in this way. His colleagues in Chemical Society flatly claim that Sitaram's moves can not be thwarted. Perhaps because of such dexterous moves, Brijesh still believes what he was told in his early childhood that his father made that bungalow in Thapagaun with white money. And sometimes, to utter surprise of all of us, Brijesh even claims that their house used to be the most beautiful house in Naya Baneswore. Is it lamentation of not being able to make brand new grand house with ill-gotten wealth or continuation of his childhood fallacy imposed on his migrain laden head? Hard to fathom becuase Sitaram Syndrome is so pervasive that not only others but family members are also brainwashed.
So, he is still stuck there and takes pride in claiming past glory of having the most beautiful bangalow in Thapagaun. But all others who know the trajectory of Sitaram's upward mobility, including Ramesh Dhungel, are generally not able to hide their chuckles on innocence of Brijesh. And sometimes, they may poke fun on him saying "Bichara sojo chha. Dherai tension dinu hundaina, migraine le sataula." Sitaram knows mind game very well and his own son is the proof of this. So, for a master manipulator like him, leaving registrarship to become extraconstitutional superboss who can advise VC is definitely not relinquishing his position of power. Bhadraman might be realizing it now that under Suresh Raj and Sitaram, he may get registrar or VCship but he will remain their eternal servant.
In the wake of KUPA movement, ultimately Sitaram found a real taste for his maipulative skills in KU. When faculties and staffs started swelling the KUPA and KUSA rank and file, initially Sitaram was really nervous. Becuase, at that time, he could not understand why his manipulations failed. He was so jaded and scared that he used to complain with everyone that faculties and staffs gheraoed him as if gheraoing him is aking to murdering someone. He profusely complained as if the faculties and staffs are in habit of gheraoing everyone. Never he mentioned that it was wrong on his part to terminate faculties in bulk. So, he has never realized that if it were to be some other university, his crime would have already ensured face swelling punches on his upper part.
The decency and peacefulness with which KUPA and KUSA members carried out their agitation is remarkable. It is remarkable in that it provided enough leeway for the thug gang of KU. It allowed Suresh Raj to buy time and it allowed Sitaram to devise new strategy. It allowed Pushpa Raj to think afresh and it allowed all the bootlickers to grab plum position. The Sitaram syndrome of KU is apparently thriving in peace and tranquility of the silent protests of KUSA and KUPA members. Then, what shall we do? Shall we ransack KU, burn Suresh Raj's chair and stone the vehicles of VC, and registrar? No! Never. We should never do all these things. We should continue to raise our voices. We should continue to inform every one that we will continue our peaceful agitation as long as power centres of Nepal overlook the mess in KU. We should continue to petition every free thinking individual that they need to speak their mind now because Suresh Raj is no longer educationist and developer. He is a power hungry mafia who likes appreciation only.
Sitaram syndrome may demand another faculty's life and it may allow another faculty to be beaten like a dog by the local goons. But, we have to renounce violence if we want to denouce nepotism and corruption in academia for ever. We have only one weapon in our hand that is to raise awareness with our words. For that we need to inform Daman Dhungana also, and we need to inform officials of CIAA also. We need to ask Daman Dhungana who is dirtier? Politicians of Nepal or academicians liks Suresh Raj? We need to ask CIAA whether they have checked antecedents of Sitaram Adhikary or not? If everyone looks into this syndrome of Sitaram, I am sure that it will be wiped out from KU for ever and never to come back and rear its ugly head.
