University teachers begin relay hunger strike

Demanding resignation of officials of Kathmandu and Gautam Buddha Universities and appointment of new officials in all universities, the university teachers have begun a relay hunger strike in the capital from Tuesday.

Four members of the Nepal Teachers Association have begun the strike at Tri Chandra Campus, Ghantaghar, this morning. Agitators said the programme would continue for the next five days and if their demands are not addressed, stronger programmes would be announced.

The association has been demanding sacking of the officials of KU and GBU saying they were appointed during the royal regime and immediate appointment of officials in other universities.

The government has appointed only vice chancellors in Tribhuvan, Pokhara, Nepal and Purbanchal universities. However, in absence of rectors, registrars and examinations chiefs, the universities have not been able to function smoothly. nepalnews.com ia Aug 07 07
